A Pantry That Makes Dinner Easy
A well-chosen cupboard means there is always a meal in the house, even on the day you forgot to shop.
Think in meals, not items
A pantry works when its contents combine. Instead of buying random tins, stock the pieces of four or five dinners you can make without a recipe.
The base layer
- Dried pasta, rice and one other grain.
- Tinned tomatoes, beans and chickpeas.
- Onions, garlic and a long-keeping vegetable.
- A good oil, a vinegar and salt.
The flavour layer
- Stock or stock cubes.
- Soy sauce, mustard and one chilli product you like.
- A few dried spices you actually use, not a rack you inherited.
First in, first out
Put new purchases at the back and older ones at the front. Check dates once a month and plan a meal around whatever is closest to expiry.
Leftovers belong in the plan
Cool cooked food promptly and refrigerate it. Food-safety agencies define the temperature danger zone slightly differently, so follow the guidance of the authority where you live for how long leftovers keep.
